Mycal Hoffman is a graphite and charcoal artist. He was born in Durban and has moved countless times around South Africa and now resides in Jozi with his family.
Mycal has always pursued a creative path and while everyone was thinking about what they wanted to do for a living, Mycal was thinking about what he didn’t want to do.
Steered towards a career in a creative environment, he studied at the Art Foundation in Saxonwold and then specialised in Design and brand development.
After many years working for advertising agencies he started his own creative agency in 2007 and has never looked back, redefining the days in his own culture – as Mycalture.
While delivering on everyone else’s creative expectations he found a sense of release by drawing and expressing his own personality through graphite and charcoal drawing. Mycal – if asked – loosely positions himself as a cross-pollinated realism and surrealism artist but doesn’t like to limit himself to titles. He believes that the concept or drawing will take him where it wants to go irrespective of the genre, class or definition thereof.
His dream is to draw all day, everyday, and let time pass him by. Currently he only produces a few pieces a year due to his limited time and sells his originals and specialised Giclee prints of this work.
Although he has achieved a few awards and mentions in various creative environments he prefers as a person to remain unnoticed, unmentioned and constantly oscillates between being seen and not being seen.
He prefers his work having the attention.
Mycal’s work shows a combination of realism and attention to detail juxtaposed with a loose approach of thought, concept and application within his medium – wrapped together with a composition by design.
