Introducing The Drawing Guild
Coleen Williams - Lady in Red

The Drawing Guild was born out of a need to promote art in the drawn medium in South Africa. Across the world Pastel and Pencil Societies have popped up to celebrate the works created in pastel, coloured pencil and graphite. While a lot of these societies are open to artists from other countries, its often difficult to partake in the events and exhibitions.

Pastel and pencil are some of the oldest mediums, with the first award to a pastel artist being that of Joseph Vivien in 1701. Despite this fact they are often viewed as ‘lesser’ mediums by galleries. This perception has changed a lot internationally and we hope to change this perception here too.

Our dream is to host regular exhibitions in different parts of the country to present the work of the very talented South African artists already working in this medium. Furthermore we will endeavour to also have regular online exhibitions.

The Drawing Guild is a dream in the making, we hope it will grow in both following and artists…
